Spanish Wells - Five Reasons to Visit This Bahamas Treasure

Pink Sand Beach

A sea-shell pink beach beckons along the northern coast of this tiny island. You'll want to throw off your shoes and dig your toes in the baby-powder soft sand. That is, if you can stay out of the clear, sea-glass aqua, brilliant turquoise, deep indigo water. The palate of colors on the serene sea would please even the most discerning artist. And at sunset the pinks and blues are reflected in the sky development you feel as if you are living in a colorful Caribbean painting.

Beach Tent For Babies

Family Friendly

Safe sufficient to leave your doors unlocked and slow-paced sufficient that all you'll need for communication is a golf-cart, Spanish Wells is the perfect get-a-way for families with small children. Stop and pick up a home-made lunch from the ladies under the blue tent and bring your picnic of conch salad, grilled beef kabobs, and former peas and rice down to the beach where the water is clear and the kids can play in the shallows and hunt for pearly pink conch shells and live sand dollars. Gentle waves lap the shore beckoning toddlers to play tag while mom and dad plunk beach chairs at the water's edge and catch a tan under the warm Bahamas sun.

Off Shore Aquarium

Not far off shore lays the Devil's Backbone, a pristine reef that is home to stripey sergeant majors, silvery barracuda, and graceful spotted eagle rays. You can snorkel or dive on the reef with local guides. Be sure to bring an underwater camera to capture the local wildlife. And if you are lucky, maybe after introducing you to funny faced puffer fish, your guide will catch you a lobster dinner.

Local Lobster

Called craw-fish on this fisherman's paradise, lobster is the former source of income on Spanish Wells. Proving nearly a million pounds of lobster tails a year, Spanish wells is the whole one supplier of lobster to the Red Lobster bistro chain. Of course, if you visit, you won't need to go to a fancy bistro to find this delectable dish. Nearly every eatery in town offers grilled craw-fish. Or if you'd rather, just head down to the dock where you can buy grouper, snapper and yes, lobster, fresh off the boat. Try grilling the succulent tails after marinating in butter, coconut milk, and lime. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.

Rita the Manatee

Rita, the local manatee, makes her home in the Gentle waters of Spanish Wells, harbor. She and her calf are well-loved by the locals and the grateful recipients of mounds of green veggies. The waters nearby Spanish wells do not furnish the usual habitat for these Gentle giants and, when the locals discovered Rita was pregnant, they were concerned she would not find the food she needed to bring up a salutary calf. Money was donated for fresh produce, not reasonable on this tiny island, and a few local women spent hours throwing broccoli, lettuce and other green goodies to the mermaid-in-waiting. In the summer of 2010, a salutary calf was born and today, if you speculation down to the docks, you too can watch mom and baby swimming in the shallows. Don't forget to stop by the store and buy green leaf lettuce so you can try your hand at feeding them dinner.
